I used diluted brown shoe polish, which was a pain to dilute to the shade I wanted.
I'm happy with the results. :)

Yep, the blade was the hardest part. I went through quite a few pieces of bone before I got one that didn't break.

Actually I'm not sure what kind of bone it is, I was digging in a box of bone bits at a friends workshop.
He an avid outdoorsman and doesn't waste anything on any of the animals he hunts.

I'm an Archaeologist by trade and I dig up lots of bones. Most of the animal bone I find is in trash pits or kill sites so I can tell what people were raising/hunting/eating by the type of bone I find. I'm guessing you used a deer leg bone for the handle and maybe a pig rib for the blade. But that's some really cool carving and treatment to get the color right. You should make more stuff like this. They could sell for a good profit at a trade show or on eBay.
